Most deadlines are over and it’s about time to get festive. Only three more weeks of term remain before Christmas and we somehow need to keep our motivation up.

Birds and Beasts, Headingly Enterprise and Arts Centre, Tuesday 21st

‘Birds and Beasts evolved whilst stuck in a log cabin during a German snowstorm. Displaying a natural instinct for memorable pop music, the band channel their love and knowledge of animals to inform their classic sound and distinctive voice – reflecting our own lives through the virtue and violence of the animal kingdom, these songs get under your skin.’ From 8:00 pm until 10:30 pm and the music genre ranges from pop and alternative to indie and rock.

Joe Lycett, The Wardrobe, Wednesday 22nd

‘Here’s your chance to see a preview show from a top comic before he heads out on a massive tour. Joe Lycett is headlining a one-off night at The Wardrobe for what he’s calling a ‘LOLs in Progress’ performance. This is to warm-up for his ‘I’m About to Lose Control and I Think Joe Lycett’ tour which comes to City Varieties in February – expect jokes, paintings and some of his internet trolling escapades.’

The Kooks, First Direct Arena, Thursday 23rd

‘The Kooks are an indie band which formed in Brighton, England, United Kingdom in 2004. The band currently consists of Luke Pritchard (vocals, guitar), Hugh Harris (guitar), Peter Denton (bass) and Nick Millard (drums). Nick is currently filling in for Paul Garred due to a recent arm injury.’ Doors open at 6:00 pm and tickets are £27.50.

The Magic Lantern Festival, Roundhay Park, from Friday 24th

‘The UK’s biggest lantern festival is back and it’s taking over Roundhay Park for the second year in a row, promising to be bigger and better than last year. The Magical Lantern Festival features an array of larger-than-life lanterns, from ‘Polar Bears on Ice’ to ‘Chinese Temple of Heaven’, which you’ll come across as you walk the trail around the park. Its not just lanterns, though – their entertainment zone is home to a food and drink area, a tipi bar, Santa’s Grotto and fairground rides.’

Otley Beer Festival, Otley Rugby Club, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th

‘November will bring the 17th Otley Beer Festival. It’s one of the most popular beer festivals in Yorkshire and you don’t even have to worry about planning ahead – each day is pay-on-the-door. Once you’re in you can work your way through their selection of over 60 real ales, as well as a selection of cider, keg beers and perry. They’ve also got you covered with street food stalls and live music across the weekend.’
