All the struggles of being the innocent one in your friendship group

Never have I ever done something scandalous

There's always one, that friend who starts uni with all the life experience of a twelve year old, who is totally shell-shocked by the debauchery of the student lifestyle and takes a little while longer than everyone else to adapt. When it comes down to it they still know how to have a good time, they just need a bit of a push, and it's oh so entertaining when they finally go wild.

Having to make an extra strong drink for Never Have I Ever just to keep up

After sitting through two rounds of everyone's favourite drinking game having taken just one sip, you begin to realise everyone is already smashed and you've barely hit tipsy. The suggestions get more and more adventurous as your friends admit to everything from drugs to having sex in public, while you wait for a simple "never have I ever been hungover at work". Either pour yourself a quad vod or down half of your drink every turn, or you'll be heading to the club sober.

Never quite understanding the rules of texting

While your friends have mastered the art of texting ten boys at once (three of them have the same name so instead they have a variety of nicknames), you are busy taking baby steps with that one guy you like. They try to coach you through it but you'll never understand the games they're used to playing – why do I have to wait three hours to reply? Are you sure the winky tongue face isn't a bit cringe? Since when was that a euphemism for sex?

Despite your lack of experience you're always the go-to for dating advice

Nobody quite knows why, but when it comes to dating advice, you're the best there is. You give the most sensible answer to the decision between boys A and B, you can tell when your friends are catching feelings before they even start to realise it, and best of all you give the greatest pep talks when it all goes wrong. Maybe it's just the fact that you haven't yet been corrupted by the world of tinder dates and casual sex, but for once, your friends truly value your innocence.

When you finally do something dirty it becomes the source of all humour for the next six months

While you hang your head in shame and try to forget the events of the night before, your friends revel in the most unexpected piece of gossip they've heard all year. They flood the group chat with a series of "are you serious??" and "omg tell me everything" until they have enough info to drag this out for another year. They'll tag you in memes about sex, make snide comments on your insta pics and deal out ridiculous amounts of side-eye any time someone mentions the bar/club where it all went down. Okay, so maybe you are a little bit proud of yourself.

Making a dirty joke and having to deal with the awkward silence

Why is it your friends can spend lectures whispering about the most intimate details of their sex lives, yet the minute you jokingly bring up the topic of vibrators during pre-drinks everyone looks at you like they just heard the joke from their Mum? Maybe they aren't used to hearing that kind of stuff come out of your mouth but come on, you're only trying to fit in.

Losing your innocent pal to the dark side and feeling totally lost

At the start there were two of you, that one other friend who could relate to the fact that you've never been in a proper relationship or gotten absolutely smashed. Together you got excited over the small things; your first time doing tequila shots or kissing a stranger in a club. Then suddenly they start having casual sex, buying expensive lingerie and telling you they'll "help you find your inner hoe". Part of you seriously admires them, but you also feel more inexperienced than ever.

Not hearing from your mate since they went home with a stranger and immediately assuming they're dead

When you're not familiar with the world of drunken one night stands the thought of going home with a total stranger at the end of the night can be somewhat daunting… actually it's just terrifying. When your friend disappears in an Uber with their latest fling and you don't hear from them till 4pm the next day, chances are they have just fallen asleep at his place, but your first instinct is to call the police, because obviously they have been kidnapped and murdered.

Drinking properly for the first time during freshers and not having a clue what you're doing

While your new found friends reminisce over passing out drunk at house parties when they were fifteen, you think about the handful of times you've drank alcohol before coming to uni and feel so out of your depth. What's a jagerbomb? What should I bring to pre-drinks? Don't worry, after a few weeks you'll be well practised in the art of drinking, that is after you've thrown up and embarrassed yourself a few times first.

Experiencing a "legendary sesh" and feeling truly scarred

You know the one, that night which starts out with casual drinks in your kitchen and ends with everything going to shit. Someone goes missing, someone loses their phone, someone doesn't even get into the club because they can't stand up straight and someone else gets kicked out after throwing up on the dance floor. While everyone else declares the night "legendary", you feel totally shocked and a little bit guilty. You tell yourself you're never drinking again, until next weekend of course.

At the end of the day, you're the same as everyone else

You love a good night out and hearing all the gossip from your friend's latest hookup excites you as much as the next girl, you're just a bit behind when it comes to trying it out for yourself. And surely that's a good thing, just think of how many experienced people you can turn to for advice and encouragement when you finally decide to take the plunge.
