Major roads in Headingley have closed after reports of a hand grenade at a police station

There are delays of up to an hour


A number of major roads have been closed in Leeds this afternoon after a potentially dangerous item was handed into a police station sparked an alert. Police said a man had discovered what appeared to be hand grenade while clearing out the home of a deceased relative.

He arrived at Weetwood Police Station at around 2pm when he told officers about the suspected grenade, which was in his car outside the station. A cordon has been put in place until the army’s bomb squad arrives to make an assessment.

The incident has resulted in the closure of the A660 Otley Road in both directions, with delays of up to an hour being reported by bus companies. West Yorkshire Metro have warned that the road was closed in both directions between the A6120 Leeds Outer Ring Road and Otley Old Road . First Leeds said its 1, 6 and X84 services were all being disrupted as a result.
