A man caused a security alert at Leeds railway station after telling police he was “planning a massacre” there. A court heard that Christopher Weldon contacted West Yorkshire Police and spoke to them via a web chat, saying that he was going to attack people at the city’s station.

Officers were dispatched to the railway station but nothing happened. Weldon contacted police again later the same day and told them he wanted to kill someone. He told a phone operator that he was carrying a sharpened blade, described what clothing he was wearing and said he would be in the Becketts Bank pub on Park Row.

Officers arrested Weldon outside HSBC Bank on Park Row and he was found in possession of an eight-inch blade. Weldon admitted to the officers that he had made the calls as he was suffering from mental health problems and depression.

Kate Bissett, mitigating, said: “He does become overwhelmed by life’s stresses.” Miss Bissett said Weldon, 41, of Ibbotson Mews, Churwell, Leeds, had a breakdown in March 2016 and had suffered further depressive episodes due to financial problems and the breakdown of his marriage.

The Recorder of Leeds, judge Peter Collier, QC, said: “You tried to get yourself back into hospital but you ended up in Armley prison which would have been quite a wake-up call for you.”
