Wood care firm Ronseal conducted research that shows the people of Leeds enjoy 5,511 laughs per year, which was just behind 5,694 in Bristol and 5,840 in Sheffield.

The survey revealed that more than a quarter of Brits enjoyed witty sparring matches with partners and almost two in ten said their children’s remarks left them in stitches. Making fun of friends, bad hairstyles and choices of partners and fashion were the best topics for banter.

A spokesperson from Ronseal said: “Banter is a part of British culture and whether we are making fun of situations, our friends or our own predicaments no-one does it quite like we do.

After Sheffield, Bristol and Leeds, London is in fourth place with 5,183 ‘laughs a year’, Cardiff in fifth place with 5,147 and Liverpool in sixth with 5,037.
