Leeds Union will donate your leftover stuff to charity this Christmas

Give back to the community before you leave for the holidays

Students going home for the holidays are urged to leave a Christmas presence in Leeds this festive period with three easy steps.

From recycling empty Christmas party bottles to donating last season’s unwanted clothes and having a clear out of the fridge and cupboard, all these actions can help to leave a Christmas presence in your community. And Leeds University Union are making it even easier to do so.

On Wednesday 7 December students can donate their leftover food, unwanted clothes and empty glass bottles to collection points at Hyde Park Picture House and Hyde Park Book Club. Leftover food will be donated to homeless charities and food banks around Leeds, giving them a much needed Christmas present. Unwanted clothes will be given to food banks also and glass will be recycled. Glass will be collected by Leeds City Council.

Jamie Ali Leeds University Union’s Community Officer said: “When you’re going home for the holidays, remember that LUU is around to help you get rid of your food waste in a sustainable way, which will give the worse off some extra food at this time of year. We’ll have a few drop off points around Hyde Park which makes it easy to give back even if you don’t have a car.”

Students can donate from 11am-4pm at either the Hyde Park Picture House or Hyde Park Book Shop collection point. The Leeds Community Project Workers, LUU’s Community Organising team, will be on hand to help you and tell you more about how your community will be benefitting from your donations.

Leeds University Union will be working with St Vincent de Pauls, Leeds North & West Food Bank and the Real Junk Food Project to get your donations to feed people facing difficult times this festive season.

This collection day is part of the wider Leave Leeds Tidy Project, which aims to reduce landfill during the student changeover period. Last changeover the project helped to divert a whopping 25 tonnes of unwanted items away from landfill and back to be reused by the Leeds community.
