Bomb disposal units called as weapons found on campus

They were found during a safety check on WWI history collections

Yesterday afternoon police was called to campus after a number of  WWI weapons and ammunition were found in a secure basement during an audit.

The Clothworkers Building was cordoned off and nearby buildings were evacuated as bomb disposal experts were called.

A spokeswoman from West Yorkshire Police said: “There was no confirmation available that the items were deactivated or inert and the building was evacuated as a precaution.

“Army bomb disposal experts were called in and the items were removed to a quarry on the outskirts of Leeds for a controlled explosion.”

A passer by took photos of the disposal team in action

Close by libraries had been evacuated due to safety procedures, it is unknown how long for.

PC Matt Guy,  University of Leeds and local police officer, was on scene throughout the whole evacuation of the weapons. Matt described it as an “interesting experience”.

He said he was nervous when a bomb disposal unit officer dropped a plug from the top of a WWI hand grenade on the floor.
