Meet the Women’s Hockey 1st team
If you need them, they’ll be at Strawbs
We are the LUUWHC 1st Team. You’ll find us at the playing field of Weetwood at least four times a week, working hard to stay in the BUCS Premier League.
When we’re not doing that, you can find us on Wednesdays at Strawbs (the best pub on the Otley Run), having a couple hocsocs, followed by a trip to Players for a VK or two.
Those of us with stamina continue on to Warehouse to join loads of other societies in one of the most popular nights out in Leeds, Mischief. It’s tough, and in order to keep up this hectic schedule you’ve got to be a certain kind of woman.
Flo Esplin
Second year, Psychology
Position: Forward/Mid.
Most likely to: Marry Joe Hart.
Favourite night out: It probably has got to be a Mint Monday.
Future goals: Again, marry Joe hart – or, become Flo Hart.
Fun fact: I can isolate my eyelid muscle, so I can wink like a doll.
Ellie McGrath
Second year, Biology
Nickname: Pukka. In Wakefield, where I go out at home, there is no McDonald’s and the other takeaways are a bit naff – so we all go to the pie shop and have pie, chips and gravy. On our infamous welcome social in my fresher year, I proudly wore a pie on my head all day – #yorkshirelass.
Position: Midfield.
Most likely to: Be injured.
Favourite night out: Hifi Tuesdays… after the season has finished of course.
Future goals: Marry Prince Harry – I’ve got a major thing for gingers.
Fun Fact: When I was a toddler, I had the bad habit of pushing buttons and peas up my nose and ended up in hospital.
Charlotte Stevens
Second year, Medical Sciences
Nickname: Don’t have one. I escaped freshers with my real name intact.
Position: Midfield/Defence.
Most likely to: Enter a nostril flaring contest.
Favourite night out: Events at Beaverworks – I love it there.
Future goal: To swim in the Roger Stevens fountain.
Best night out ever: I fell into the Business school wall and gave myself a black eye and cut my head after Quids In on a Monday night. Not my finest moment.
Fun fact: I can fit a 10p sideways into my nostrils. It’s a talent.
Colette Walton
Second year, Sport and Exercise Science
Nickname: Sass. Why? Don’t ask silly questions.
Position: Forward.
Most likely to: Name my children after members of the royal family.
Favourite night out: Strawbs Bar, all day erry day.
Future goals: To overcome my dyslexia issues.
Funniest night out: I got very emotional after losing my free cookie from Subway after a night out, then found it the next day in my pillowcase. I also once thought I had absolutely fucked it after a night out and lost my card, but found it the next morning behind the milk in the fridge.
Fun fact: Female kangaroos have three vaginas. Cheers, Sass.
April Leeson
Third year, Arabic and Spanish
Nickname: Robyn, because Fit Tim can call me whatever the hell he wants.
Position: Half back, occasional inside forward/full-back.
Most likely to: Twerk.
Favourite night out: Hifi Sundays! Live music followed by awesome Mix Tape. Gin & Juice is my second fave.
Future goals: Compete in the Twerk Olympics.
Best night out ever: Snoop Dogg bought a shot for me when he DJ’d at control, because I was dancing at the front all night and he announced he was giving a drink “to the two girls at the front”. ONE OF THEM WAS ME. Legend.
Fun fact: I sat in Skepta’s tour bus as he played FIFA with my friend after his gig.
Katie Hopkisson
Second year, Mechanical Engineering
Favourite night out: Maluko, but it’s sadly closed.
Future goals: To have lots of cute hockey-playing babies.
Fun fact: I am the captain of LUUWHC 1st Team, boyaaaah.
Alice Stillwell
Second year, History
Position: Defender.
Most likely to: Get kicked out a club.
Favourite night out: Pryzm…
Future goals: To score a goal one day.

Izzie Limb
First year, Natural Sciences
Nickname: Limbo. The clue is in my name.
Position: Defence.
Most likely to: Empty my stomach on a bus.
Favourite night out: Hockey Wednesdays. Going out with a whole club of people you know is so much fun.
Future goals: To make it to Warehouse on a Wednesday – it is yet to happen.
Best night out ever: The Hockey Olympics. It’s not your typical sporting event. The 1s took gold and then had a few more drinks together, great fun.
Fun fact: I am the youngest player in the team.
Emily Spencer
First year, Natural Sciences
Nickname: Spenny. My surname explains it.
Position: Centre half.
Most likely to: Get with Justin Bieber.
Best Leeds night out: A good Hockey Wednesday at Players followed by Warehouse wins by miles.
Future goals: Ballin’ with a rich husband.
Fun fact: I am 1/16th Italian.
Ellie Lyne
First year, International Business
Nickname: Blondie. When I turned up for preseason the captain thought it would be awkward to describe me as ginger and so the nickname Blondie was formed.
Position: Midfield.

Future goals: Be drag flicker number one.
Louisa Highwood
First year, Food Science and Nutrition
Position: Defence – full back.
Favourite night out: Project at O2.

Best night out ever: My friend was so drunk that she got a taxi back to halls after just arriving at the club thinking she had already been out. We returned three hours later to see she had sat in the kitchen on her own for the whole time.
Fun fact: I haven’t eaten chocolate for nearly two years.
Francesca Houghton
Second year, International History and Politics
Nickname: It was Agnes, because I look like the toddler from Despicable Me. Alas, I grew out my full fringe so the nickname disappeared.
Position: Midfield or Forward.
Most likely to: Drink a bottle of Prosecco at pre drinks.
Future goals: To be able to squat.
Favourite night out: It was Halo… RIP
Best night out ever: In freshers, I walked from Warehouse to players and back twice in a drunken state. Who knows what I was doing or where I was going.
Fun fact: I stick my tongue out when I concentrate, even when playing hockey. It’s super embarrassing.
Izzie Friedlander
First year, Maths
Nickname: GK – it’s pretty self explanatory.
Position: GK. See above!
Most likely to: To fall asleep on the bus back from matches.
Favourite night out: Vodka Revolution – food is life.
Future Goals: Be happy, be awesome, be powerful.
Funny story: I fell asleep in the corridor of my flat, playing Pokemon on the game boy.
Fun Fact: I do impressions of Donald Duck.
So there you have it, LUUWHC 1st team in all its glory.
If you see us out on a Wednesday night be sure to say hello – we’ll be the ones dressed up as unicorns outside Strawbs.
