International flute guru Azeem Ward visited Leeds this week and ended up playing a last minute gig at Wire.

He was scheduled to play a gig at the Leeds College of Music as part of his UK tour, but also organised a spontaneous performance at the Union.

Azeem, who is touring with DJ Underbelly, also called Wire and ended up playing a surprise set on Monday.

Azeem and Underbelly speaking to The Tab

In an exclusive interview with The Tab, Azeem said: “My friend that I am staying with (in Leeds) knows one of the guys that operates sound at the Wire.

“He said we could be there, and so we went and everyone went ape shit crazy.

“There were so many cameras when we were playing.”

The flautist also made a few appearances at Hyde Park House parties.

House party attendee and second-year Medic Fiona Tomlinson said: “We were just chatting to him in Mine and the boys told us to ask him back for a house party.”

Despite the poor turnout, Fiona insists that Azeem was still keen to show off his mad skills.

She said: “He came but there were literally eight of us. We fed him some pasta and sat around the kitchen table while he played the flute – he was such a gent.”

“He was going to come again last night after Wire, but it didn’t happen in the end.”
