What’s the best shop in Hyde Park

And they told us what they thought of you

Groceries hyde park leeds the tab leeds university of leeds

You might not be doing your weekly shop there, but the grocery shops in Hyde Park are a staple of student life.

You detox with their fresh fruit and veg, you dash there desperately to get hangover snacks.

They’re the shops we’re all familiar with, that we know and love. But which is the best, and more importantly, do they actually like us?

Sainsbury’s

The hub for many living in Hyde Park, Sainsbury’s would arguably be the mothership of grocery shopping in the area. Its mass attraction status comes partially from convenience – to the student residents could largely be due to convenience. It’s the first shop you come across when heading in to Hyde Park proper and sells your alcohol, condoms and cigarettes. On the other hand, three onions do cost a pound. .

What they think of us:

Customer care assistant Vicky said: “Students in this area are so crazy. They are very, very nice people. They’re very lively.

“Especially when you come in at night drunk.”

Makkah Foods

Makkah’s is an arguably underused service that many would benefit from. Easily found opposite the Mosque it offers such deals as 9kg of onions for just £2. You simply can’t understate this marvel of shopping experience.

This place even has its own butchers which serves what can only be described as dragon breast – yeah, it’s labelled as chicken breast but it seems physically impossible for a chicken to become such a size.

You can even have your packages sent here to be collected at a later date if you are out the house, saving you the time and effort of having to go the sorting office. The advantages are endless.

What they think of us:

Store manager Sohail Saleem said: “The sudents are good I would say. Overall they’re fine.”

That’s the Makkah’s seal of approval.

Maumoniat

This shop, located off Brudenell Road, on Brudenell Grove (the same as Dixy Chicken) provides a cheap alternative to the big Sainsbury’s and Co-op.

It even beats the deal of onions found in Makkah Foods. Here the same amount of onions can be purchased at £1.90. It is small though.

What they think of us:

Owner and shop namesake Ilyas Maumoniat said: “They [students] are okay. They are fine.”

Thanks Ilyas.

The Co-operative

The Coop offers a huge selection and will provide the shopping for those living closer to the Headingly/Burley park region. Their prices can be expensive for some, but again, it comes down to convenience for coming here, being well placed at a cross roads leading to Burley park station.

Technically this shop falls just outside of Hyde Park, being on the wrong side of Cardigan Lane. Due to its size and convenience it’s still being included.

What they think of us:

Customer team member Kelly Whitaker said: “The majority of them [students] are nice, some tend to look down on those that serve just because they’re doing a degree.

“But I did a degree myself, English and History, and just didn’t know what I wanted to do so got a part time job to get some money.”

Treat them with respect please.
