The Ultimate Cheesy Christmas Playlist

Check out our festive playlist, filled with unlikely Christmas covers and some merry hidden gems.

| UPDATED

For most, Christmas is a time of excess, but for the jukebox it is all about balance.

We’ve lined up fifteen Christmas hits your playlist should not be without and as we’re a lovely bunch we’ve listened to some shockingly awful covers.

1. WHITE CHRISTMAS

An iconic song, no doubt, however it is a bit bland Bing and almost drone-like in its pace. Thankfully Michael Bublé has brought a wonderful cover into our lives to fix that problem.

How Taylor Swift was ever allowed to release her version of this beautiful song is unclear. Usually I appreciate her work but seriously someone should put her in a cage at Christmas.

 2. WALKING IN THE AIR

Popularised by a young Aled Jones all those years ago the band Nightwish have produced a pretty spectacular cover that is definitely worth listening to.

 3. BRAND NEW CHRISTMAS

A lesser known Christmas song produced by the band Hot Chocolate in the 80s but it definitely is relevant today… and it’s a damn fine tune.

4. LAST CHRISTMAS

A classic Christmas tune brought to us by Wham although who knows who the other guy is? Brought to us by George Michael and not-George Michael this song brings hope for love.

Although someone should tell Ariana Grande that adding a modern drumbeat to a song does not make for a good cover version.

Remember when I said Taylor Swift should be put in a cage? Here’s some more evidence for that fact.

5. LET IT SNOW

Every year we all have the same wish that it will actually snow when it’s meant to, on Christmas day. With 100 days of snow rumoured to fall maybe this year could be the one. Although it’s a shame that now we’re of an age when the novelty of snow is even shorter than our attention span in a lecture.

If awkward 90s covers are your thing then knock yourself out with this version by Boyz II Men.

Yet that’s nothing compared to what Jessica Simpson has managed to achieve. Yes,  Jessica Simpson. There are not words enough to describe this atrocity. Included for your horrified amusement only.

 6. I WISH IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS EVERY DAY

Honestly, for most people this would be the last thing they would want: spending time with those family members you only see once a year and aren’t really that fond of, having to be happy just because it’s Christmas even if you’re not, the endless giving of gifts which you can’t afford once over let alone every day…BUT this 70s hit is fun and definitely puts you in the Christmas spirit, even if it’s only for the song’s duration.

7. FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK

With its deceptively slow beginning this delightfully crude song is simply great and especially when you’ve had a few. None of us know the words or can Irish dance but it doesn’t mean we won’t try when this song comes on.

 8. WONDERFUL CHRISTMASTIME

This late 70s classic is always another one to inspire the Christmas spirit despite the questionable techno sound.

This cover performed by Demi Lovato removes that techno vibe and for a Disney star it isn’t overly cheesy.

 9. NEVER DO A TANGO WITH AN ESKIMO

Another lesser known song that is wonderful in its pointlessness. Although it’s no longer politically correct to say ‘eskimo’ Alma Cogan was not to know. If you imagine the song with the word ‘Inuit’ instead you can still get the idea.

10. LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS

It’s important to remember that some people are alone at Christmas time and what Mud has done in this dreary song is remind us just how unbearable this can be. ‘Single Ladies’ gave singletons hope and empowerment but this just doesn’t apply at Christmas. It’s time to keep it real.

The band Blue did a cover of this song a few years back making a slight change to the title from ‘Lonely’ to ‘Lone-lay’. It is irrelevant how great Duncan looks in a Christmas hat for their cover really is awful.
