False Alarm as Bogus Union Worker Turns Out to be a TV Salesman

Union ‘imposter’ is revealed as a door-to-door seller with an unusual sales ploy

Students were terrified after a man pretending to work for Leeds University Union was knocking on doors in Hyde Park on Wednesday.

But the rogue Union worker turned out to be a door to door sales man with bad sales chat.

The poor TV package seller spent the night in a cell after a number of students reported him to the police.

A Police spokesperson said the man had been making the false report with “good intent” as he was just trying to sell TV packages, but was restricted by a language barrier.

Students became alarmed on Wednesday afternoon after the man claimed to be from the Union, but was unable to show any form of ID.

On their Facebook page Leeds University Union posted: “An arrest has been made in relation to the allegation of a bogus caller claiming to be a staff member of Leeds University Union knocking on doors in Hyde Park.”

Student Oliver Kersh told The Tab: “The Union guy came into ours today. We had a chat with him and he was just selling stuff.”

Maybe he will try a different sales tactic next time..
