The Graaarse is Greener in the South

London leads charge into higher education

In our ever more equalitarian society the enduring legacy of the North-South rivalry can sometimes seem a little silly.

But new statistics suggest Leeds might actually be full of people from the south.

According to a recent survey, the capital is now top dog for students entering higher education, with Londoners 43% more likely to study at a university than their Geordie counterparts in the north-east of England.

The steep increase in university applications by 18 year olds from Peckham, Barking and Croydon means that Northerners are being forced to eat humble (pork) pie.

The trend comes as a result of a government-funded initiative to fund an expansion in the availability of university places.

And for any MiC fans out there, if you’re looking to bag yourself the next Jamie Laing then things are looking up : in London’s posher suburbs, as high as two out of every three school leavers now goes on to study at university.
