One member of Leeds University Union Hiking Club has been found dead on a society trip to the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands.

Five others, who are unhurt, have been airlifted to safety by an RAF Lossiemouth helicopter.

The society trip left Leeds on Friday afternoon, with some planning to return on Sunday evening and the remainder arranging to come back on Monday night.

A spokesman for the Northern Constabulary said: ‘The body of a male was recovered in the Jacob’s Ladder area of the Cairngorms.’

Update:

The hiker has been named as Graham Connell, 31, from Castleford. He graduated from the University of Leeds in 2004 with a Diploma in Higher Education.

Simon Archer, former President of Leeds University Hiking Club said:

‘Our thoughts are with everyone’s friends and family.’

Speaking to The Tab, a spokesperson from the University said:

“We are sorry to learn of the death of one of our former students and our thoughts are with his family and friends. We are working with Leeds University Union and our counselling services to offer support to students who have been affected by this tragedy.”
