Counterfeit cigarettes suspected to contain arsenic and rat droppings have been discovered in shops across Leeds.

Health experts have also found dead insects and lead inside many of the fakes.

In an investigation by The Sun, fake cigarettes were bought by an undercover journalist in the Harehills area of the city.

Bewar Food Store sold Regal King Size packs of 20, which usually cost over £7, for just £3.

They looked genuine and even had a health warning, but warning signs could be found in the faded wording and unevenly wrapped paper.

David Lodge, manager of West Yorkshire Trading Standards, later confirmed: “They are undoubtedly counterfeit.”
