Former gymnast Gabby plans to take an active role at the university. She has already delivered a broadcast journalism masterclass at the uni, giving students advice before taking interview questions from them.

The journalist, who was one of the BBC’s main presenters during the 2012 Olympics said: “I’m honoured to be appointed as Leeds Trinity University’s first Chancellor.

“I’m a firm believer in the importance of higher education, having seen the enormous benefits that my own university experience has given me.”

Gabby was born in Leeds and still has strong ties to the city. Her dad, Terry Yorath, played for Leeds United.

Lithe Logan represented Wales in rhythmic gymnastics at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

Now 39, she can still do the splits.

Gabby becomes chancellor of one of only two catholic universities in the UK. Gabby said: “It is so good to be able to hold this position in Leeds, which I still think of as my home city.”
