How to get your film fix for the term


We’re somehow already a couple of weeks into term, meaning autumn is in full force. It’s officially the season for avoiding the growing piles of work on your desk in favour of snuggling down with a hot drink and your favourite movie. But if you’re fancying a change of scenery from your cold and lonely uni room, we can do you one better and suggest you take a visit to Take 2 Cinema on campus.

For those of you who may not know, Take 2 Cinema is tucked away in the mazes of Bowland college, at the Bowland Main Lecture Theatre. They have screenings in the evening Friday to Monday, and tickets cost only £4.50, which can be purchased via their website. They also offer showings with subtitles, which you can find out more about on their Instagram. For anyone who’s feeling particularly keen, they also offer a membership for £18 a term, boasting priority seating, access to a Facebook group, and five free films over the term!

So, if you consider yourself a bit of a film buff, or simply want to try something new, then check out their film schedule for Michaelmas term below, and see if anything catches your eye…

28th – 31st October – Corpse Bride

What better way to get yourself in the Halloween spirit than with a spine-tingling Tim Burton film? Take some friends along as a fun way to blow off some steam over the busy weekend.

4th – 7th November – Guardians of the Galaxy

For something a bit more lighthearted to take your mind off those mid-term deadlines, you can head down to Take 2 for two hours of lighthearted distractions. Your typical Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy has a great mix of comedy and action.

11th – 14th November – Jurassic Park

If action is your preferred genre, then you should definitely attend one of the screenings for this 1993 classic directed by Steven Spielberg. Filled with jump scares and seemingly endless moments of tension, this will have you on the edge of your seat.

18th – 21st November – Don’t Worry Darling

It has been almost impossible to miss hearing about this movie and all of the captivating press it has generated. So if you have passed over the chance to see it thus far – now would be your opportunity! With twists and turns more surprising than that lecture prep you forgot about, Don’t Worry Darling will teach you to expect the unexpected, or so we’ve heard.

25th – 28th November – Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

Another 2022 release, this film boasts a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes which is an achievement in itself. Directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the film is said to focus on the multiverse, as well as elements of sci-fi, fantasy and comedy, and this movie will have you googling what it all actually means afterwards.

2nd – 5th December – Carol

Leaning into a slightly different genre, Carol is a romantic drama, originally released in 2015. The plot is said to portray a love affair between two women who come from contrasting backgrounds, set in 1950s New York.

9th – 12th December – The Nightmare Before Christmas

The final screening this term is of this 1993 production, which depicts a skeleton from Halloween Town who finds his way to Christmas Town and causes a fair bit of chaos. An iconic Christmas film with undoubtedly catchy tunes, attending a screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas would be the perfect way to round off your Michaelmas Term at Lancaster.
