VOTE: Where is the best place to eat on campus?

A title worth fighting for

Now everyone is finally back to roaming around campus every day. We are once again faced with the issue of where to go when we “accidentally” forget a packed lunch for the third day in a row. Organisation is a skill not everyone can master, which is exactly why the university built Greggs, Costa, and Spar within about 100m of each other.

Nowadays, we as consumers are faced with an overwhelming amount of choice, which is definitely the case at Lancaster, where there are simply too many options of how to fuel our carbohydrate craving on a Tuesday afternoon. This means only one thing: it’s time we had a vote on which exactly is the best place to eat on campus?

Below are the nominations for nine of the most popular food places on campus, each rated across three categories. Firstly, as the type and range of product available, the menu is the key to any business. Secondly, price, as who isn’t trying to save money right now? And finally, the vibes, since if somewhere isn’t capable of lifting our dopamine levels just a little, then why bother?

Costa

Every student’s guilty pleasure, you must be lying if you say you’ve never been to Costa. In terms of eateries, Costa is that girl – you feel like once you’ve visited here, you’ll be able to achieve anything you set your mind to and get your life right back on track.

Menu: 4/5 Who knew there were so many different ways to make a coffee?

Price: 3/5 Treating yourself to a ‘well-earned’ Costa every other day does indeed have a devastating effect on the bank account

Vibes: 4.5/5 Name a problem coffee can’t solve

Sultans

Sultans’ staple of campus takeaways is known far and wide, but does that make it the best? After a night of partying in Sugar, the familiar sound of “hello my friend” is just so comforting. Is there anything they can’t do from curries to classic cheesy fries and their new ‘smash burger‘? Is there anything they can’t do?

Menu: 4.5/5

Price: 4/5 Everyone needs a free bottle of water from time to time

Vibes: 5/5 It’s impossible for anywhere to match the vibes after a night out

The Deli

Securing a great position for people-watching along the spine, students sometimes overlook the deli. Plus, they can cater for your hungover breakfast sandwich craving and your lunch out with a friend. Talk about versatility.

Menu: 4/5, for their range of Mac ‘n’ Cheese flavours alone

Price: 3.5/5

Vibes: 4/5, the sharing booths are just something else

Pendle Brew

Located in Pendle college, this has had a massive glow-up recently and is suitable for your study session and relaxing hangout alike.

Menu: 4/5

Greggs

The master of baked goods, Greggs is just iconic. In a prime location, where not even the most oblivious student can miss it, Greggs gets more than its fair share of customers. But this is for a good reason, as a plain glazed doughnut is enough to turn anyone’s day around.

Menu: 4/5, great range of sandwiches, baked pastries and sweet goods

Price: 5/5, £1 for a sausage roll? Say no more

Vibes: 3/5, having to wait in the queue for as long as it takes to catch a bus into town is not a vibe

Wok Inn

Located in Edward Roberts Court, this is the prime location for any eatery. Sometimes referred to as criminally underrated, every Lancs student should try Wok Inn.

Menu: 4.5/5, the amount of options available is almost overwhelming

Price: 4/5, £5.90 for sweet ‘n’ sour chicken, I’m sold

Vibes: 4/5, no complaints

Barker House Farm

A bit further out than the other choices, but not any less deserving of your consideration. Boasting a diverse menu with many vegan options, it’s worth making the trip down to Cartmel for a few hours of respite from busy campus life.

Menu: 4.5/5

Price: 4/5

Vibes: 5/5, can’t fault the relaxing aura here

Subway

An easy and satisfying lunch choice, Subway is predictable, but that isn’t a bad thing. In fact, stability is what a lot of uni students need. Yes, they mainly sell sandwiches, but they earn top points for the number of different combinations you can make, and we’re yet to get bored of it.

Menu: 4/5

Price: 3.5/5 £3.59 sounds great for a meatball sub until you realise you could get an entire meal deal for less.

Vibes: 3/5 Could invest in some comfier seating a décor

GoBurrito

As it says in the name, this is the place for you if you’re craving a burrito or nachos, and there are plenty of fillings to choose from. They always have great music playing and have indoor seating on these cold winter days, so what’s not to love?

Menu: 4/5 Their fries are to die for

Price: 3.5/5

Vibes: 4/5
