Dean of Kings College London in ‘dismay’ at far-right riots in new statement
‘Racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, abuse, incitement, and harassment has no place at King’s’
The Dean at Kings College London, Reverend Dr Ellen Clark-King, has released a statement regarding the riots which have taken place recently in the UK, offering support for students and staff.
Released on Tuesday 6th August 2024, the headline reads: “Support for students and staff affected by recent events in the UK”.
The opening of the statement reads: “Like many others, I have watched with dismay the recent riots which have taken place in a few British towns and the racism and xenophobia shown by the rioters.”
The Dean referred to the attacks on mosques and other community areas as “racism and xenophobia.”
She then goes on to acknowledge the diversity displayed at the University: “At King’s we know our life is enriched by the many different people and peoples who make up our community, welcoming the invaluable contribution made by those who have immigrated to the UK as well as by those who were born here.”
She adds: “Racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, abuse, incitement, and harassment has no place at King’s. Any incidents targeted at you or that you witness, should be reported through our online tool, Report and Support.”
It is made clear that reports are handled properly, through “well established and robust processes.”
Further, the Dean reiterated how support is available for students and staff throughout the year: “Students can speak to the King’s Counselling and Mental Health Support Service which offers free and confidential in-person and online support as well as King’s Counselling Online service. Students may also like to connect with their peers through KCLSU.”
The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer has called the actions of the rioters “far-right thuggery.” The statement made from The Dean is in alignment with the condemnation made by the PM.
