IT department moved FOUR hours away to Cornwall

Computers probably need a holiday too, but dim-witted big wigs have packed up our IT department and sent them 300 miles away.

The bizarre decision –– which has been done in a desperate bid to save money –– sees IT staff move to Cornwall in an idea concocted by Gareth Wright, the director of IT services.

Wright said the move to the South-West allowed “more investment into other elements of its IT provision”, even if that provision will need to be facilitated by the IT staff on the other side of the country.

The frustration will be real

Now, instead of taking your technical problem to nearby Waterloo, you must phone the office in Cornwall, who –– if it is a major problem –– will simply ring someone back at King’s to have a look at it.

Julia Norton, a second year English with Film student, said: “It’s probably not the best idea. There are more computer concerns which need physical support and not just over the phone.

“Most of the things they tell you on the phone you can find out on Google.”

Kyran O’Keefe, second year History, added: “That’s going to be a very long commute for the IT staff.”

Gareth Wright, director of IT services, said: “Staff have just finished a virtual learning course where previously they would have travelled to London, but instead they stayed in Cornwall with the instructor based in London.”

The distance may be daunting, but with cheap flights and huge investment worth £132 million in Cornwall’s superfast broadband system, surely there won’t be any immediate difficulties.

Only time, and the upcoming academic year, will tell.
