We asked Londoners why they were at the cereal café

They were all cereal-ously edgy

Just when you thought East London couldn’t get any more ridiculous, up popped the Cereal Killer Café. Since its opening whipped up a media storm, this cereal bar has caused more breakfast-based controversy than marmite on toast itself.

Its lovers paste their Instagrams with limited edition cereal boxes and Mariah Carey honey bears. Its haters think that it’s, well, just really fucking stupid. So we headed down (literally, downstairs, the café doesn’t love the press) to see what all the fuss is about.

WOW

Matiullah Hamidi, 21, student at City University

Brings out the kid in him.

What the hell are you doing here? “We actually had coursework. We had a deadline and, although we haven’t finished it, we just wanted to come and have fun.”

Are you having fun? “Um, yeah.”

How’s your experience been so far? “It’s really actually good, the creations. It’s a bit different to other restaurants. It’s innovative.”

Wanna talk about the décor? “I haven’t seen this kind of thing before. It’s a bit different to usual restaurants. To have all these bears, and dolls, and TVs – old TVs – it’s a bit different.”

Does it remind you of your childhood? “Of course it does, you’d think you’re like 6 or 5 [in here]. You have good memories from back then.”

Thomas Yatt, 19, “in transit”

Thomas and his Lion King.

What are you eating? “The Lion King [cocktail].”

…Do you like it? “I love it. I don’t really know, but it’s pretty delicious, y’know.”

Yeah. “I mean I was originally going for the Reese’s Puffs ‘cause I hadn’t had that since, like, I was a kid, in, um, America. But then I was up for a cocktail…’cause I was wanted a cocktail.”

Don’t you think your cereal cocktail is a bit overpriced? “How much was it?”

Leigh Deabill, 19, student at Queen Mary

Thought she’d give it a go.

Why are you even here? “My friend’s visiting, so that’s one reason why we came, and also we just both like cereal. So we thought we’d give it a go. There’s no like extravagant reason, I suppose.”

Have you been before? “No, we haven’t been before. This is the first time.”

What do you think? “I think the cereal’s tasty, but it’s a little overpriced. I mean, I think it’s like a one off thing as well. I probably wouldn’t come again.”

Paola Pueyo, 18, student at Istituto Marangoni

Already Instagrammed.

What do you think about the Cereal Killer Café? “I think it’s really unique, and different. Actually, I have a friend in Barcelona who wants to do this [build a cereal café].”

There’s no toilet here. How do you feel about that? “I didn’t even know that [her friend: “I need one now”].

Do you think the café has an intrinsic link to instagram? “Oh yeah I’ve done it [instagrammed], many times. This is my third time here.”

Romain Lepetit, 34, works at Moncler

Waiting for his friends.

Why are you here? “I really liked cereal when I was young.”

What do you think about the cereal cocktails? “Yeah, I think it’s a good idea, and also the different milk. Well me, I like normal milk, but some people prefer a specific milk.”

What do you think about the toppings? “Yeah…well…I’d have to try it.”

Do you like the decoration? “Yeah, but to be honest when I saw the video online, I remembered more small things everywhere. Now it’s more light.”

Hipster, 20-something, arts student (probably)

He looked pretty edgy.

Hey, will you let me interview you for an article? “No, sorry, I’m alright thanks”.

*He mutters to his friend as I walk away.* I don’t want to be the hipster face of the cereal café.”

From the outside.

SO MANY MILK BOTTLES.
