Hull ‘Yes to NUS campaign’ accused of breaking referendum rules

Only students and HUU members are allowed to campaign on campus

There has been more controversy as the deadline for students to vote in the NUS referendum nears. Now the ‘Yes to NUS’ campaign have been accused of breaking the rules of campaigning again by Hull No.

Robbiie Young, a LGBT+ Officer for the NUS was allegedly spotted handing out flyers and wearing a ‘Yes to NUS’ t-shirt on university grounds.

The rules state that only students registered with the University and full members of the HUU are able to participate in campaign activities. As Young does not meet either criteria, he would not be allowed to campaign at the University of Hull.

A member of ‘Hull says No to the NUS’ told us: “Robbiie appeared on campus with Gurmok (VP Sport), wearing a Yes To NUS t-shirt. The ‘Yes’ team noticed that we’d spotted him so he zipped his jacked right up. One of our team got a picture as evidence.

“Robbiie then came up to one of our team, saying ‘hope you got a good picture’ and what not, and said his T-shirt was from Topman. That wasn’t true.”

As Young is not a student of the university or a member of the HUU, he is not allowed to campaign

They added: “We reported it to the Returning Officer, who immediately went to find him and the head of the yes campaign to tell them they’d broken the rules.”

“They had been warned yesterday after having Richard Brooks on campus that it better not happen again”.

This comes after ‘Hull No’ was accused by the ‘Yes’ campaign of being “childish and unnecessary” following the accusations of unfair campaigning. Voting closed at 5pm on Friday and the results will be announced on Tuesday and 12 pm.
