We went to Valbon’s opening night to see what the fuss was all about
Watch out Sugar Mill
Following the refurbishment of the old Pozition nightclub, The Tab went to the newly branded Valbon to see if it lived up to its star-billing as the new nightclub in Hull.
The start of the night appeared to be quiet. Zviko Dangare, a second year Chemist, told The Tab: “It’s really changed, it’s so different from what Pozition was.” While the topsy-turvy layout of the building will always be unique, the new lights and strobe effects gave the various dance floors a modern twist.
“I can’t believe how cheap the drinks are, but it’s weird they’re different prices depending on which bar that you use”, said Sam Love, a 21 year old Maths student.
Indeed, the prices of doubles fluctuated between the numerous bars, but the drinks were largely very cheap – with shots going for £1.75.

Ready to party Valbon style
The three floors were all similar formats. The main, ground floor was a mix of new pop hits. The first floor was RnB based and the second, smallest floor was a marvellous podium-esque dance floor accompanied by classic, cheesy belters (we loved it when c’est la vie came on).
The advantages of having three main floors was your music taste was largely catered for. As the night rolled on, more and more clubbers made their way in and it was like being in a (less indie) [W]elly when the crowd really kicked in.
The amount of seating areas was good, one clubber told me he “loved the sofas, they’re so comfy”.

Valbon’s a fire-starter: it will be a permanent fixture at the club
And the big surprise? A scantily clad fire-breather who braved the busy main floor at 12:00. Cheesy? Of course. But it was exciting and added to the party atmosphere that had built up throughout the night.
The strobe effects were pretty fantastic. The smoke machine was intense at times, and you couldn’t see any of the squad at time, but overall it was a good night out.
It remains to be seen whether Valbon can continue to attract such a crowd – if it does then Sugar Mill definitely has competition in the multi-floor, multi-genre clubbing scene.
