HUBC Captain wears rowing Lycra to lectures to raise money for new equipment

Donations will also go to Diabetes UK

A brave sportsman wore Lycra to all his lectures today to raise money for new athletics equipment and Diabetes UK.

Second year chemist and Hull University Boat Club Captain Dec McHugh attended his 9am-5pm lectures donning the extremely tight navy and yellow Lycra.

The cold weather was no problem for Hugh, but he said his bizarre look caught the attention of a few bemused onlookers.

Dec told The Tab: “I’ve had a few strange looks around campus today, but luckily my lecturers haven’t really noticed.

The bold move is all for a good cause, however.

Dec added: “These yellow and navy stripes are the same worn by the Alumni so it’s a nice nod to them.

“The rowing lycra is what we wear to train so it’s something that links in well to what we’re trying to raise money and awareness for.

“I feel like I spend a lot of time in this Lycra – I’ve actually got more rowing Lycra than normal clothes so finding what to wear today was easier than usual.”

It remains to be seen whether these stripes become the new Hull campus style for winter.

Hull University Boat Club: Support is needed for this increasingly popular club

This brave fundraising effort is in part to raise much-needed funds for new equipment because of the record-breaking 2015 cohort of competitive rowers.

The Hull Rowing Club boathouse being destroyed due to arson and vandalism, forcing HUBC to relocate river-training to Doncaster in the last few years and limiting resources to outdated equipment to cut costs.

Dec added: “An extra injection of cash is much needed for a society that is set to increase in popularity in the next few years, and this provides the opportunity to take part in sport for everyone and anyone at Hull University.”

So far the donations have been rolling in, with Dec telling us:”I originally set a £100 target on the gogetfunding page, but on the first day we had already raised over £90 so I thought I could push it up to £250 – I think it’s definitely an achievable total.”

‘Tis the season of giving, and we think Mr. McHugh has gifted students and lecturers alike with some Lycra-clad memories for months to come.
