Glasgow Uni to increase security following reports of sexual assault

There have been four assaults near the West End


The University Glasgow is reportedly increasing security after a series of sex attacks in the West End.

Police are currently investigating four recent sexual assaults which took place near campus, the BBC reports.

A spokesperson for the uni said they would be increasing security patrols and improving the lighting on campus.

The university Twitter account tweeted to say: "Student and staff safety is of utmost importance to the University.

"Please see our message below about recent alleged assaults in the West End and if you have any concerns or information to report, please contact University of Glasgow Security or Police Scotland."

When contacted by The Glasgow Tab for more information, a spokesperson for the university told The Glasgow Tab the reported incidents "were not within the campus area," adding: "There have recently been four alleged cases of sexual assault in the West End of Glasgow – Police Scotland have charged a man in connection with three of these assaults.

"Incidents like this are rare – student safety is of the utmost importance to the University.

"We work extremely closely with Police Scotland and we have increased security patrols and improved lighting on campus.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We can confirm that inquiries are ongoing following a report of the serious sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman in Sutherland Lane, near University Place, Hillhead, in the early hours of Thursday 31 October 2019.

"Police are following a number of lines of enquiry and anyone with any information is asked to contact police."

A 34-year-old charged following reports of sexual assault is set to appear in court at a later date.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "A 34-year-old man was arrested and charged following a report of three sexual assaults on 17 October 2019 – one in Lawrence Street, Partick and one in Napiershall Street, North Woodside and 24 October in Cranworth Street, Hillhead."
