Where to eat in Glasgow this summer

Forget the McFlurry, disregard thy subway, this is where your summer scran is at

Those who have lived in Glasgow for the past year will know that our city has become a breeding ground for American style burger joints and sit-in ice cream parlours. Whether you’re on the hunt for a snack, a seven-course meal, a candy inspired cocktail or a cuisine of foreign descent – this guide will help you find something completely new to try whilst you take a break from meal deals at the library.

Sugar Dumplin

If jerk chicken and coconuts are your sorta thing, pop this Caribbean inspired rum shack on your bucket list. Hidden in Princes Square, this laid back restaurant has all the food necessary to transport you from Buchanan Street to Barbados – well at least your taste buds will think so. The BBQ chicken wings and Jamaican patties are two must-trys if you decide to give Sugar Dumplin a visit.

Chaophraya

For something a little fancy and Thai inspired, Chaophraya on Buchanan street offers a very detailed menu of Asian delicacies. Chicken Tom-Kha, steamed dumplings and papaya salad are just a few oriental tasters that will enlighten you on what a typical Thai scran might consist of. They also have massive gold buddhas and swanky lifts to different floors if the authentic Eastern grub isn’t exciting enough.

Prep Kitchen

No, this is not just a takeaway place for PT’s and protein shake enthusiasts. Even those who are not entirely clued up on pre and post workout meals, Prep Kitchen is just like any other dine-in restaurant… just with fewer calories. As well as the standard lean meat with veggie type meals, they make superfood cocktails and protein pancakes for something a little sweeter but admirably guilt-free – WIN.

Bloc

An incredibly underrated bar/restaurant underneath the grounds of Bath Street. This recently revamped venue offers not only live music, events and cheap drinks but a different food deal every day of the week for under a fiver – it’s the student dream. Take note: Steak Wednesdays – an actual 6-ounce sirloin steak for five singular pound coins. And a word – or two words – to the veggies of Glasgow .. the ‘Not-Dog’. Just Google it.

Bill’s

This cutesy restaurant on West Nile street has a nice variety of European-ish dishes. A big selection of the usual grills, salads, burgers and sides but with quirky little twists that make it different from the usual brekky, lunch and dinner diner. It also has a separate tea menu with cheesecake in a glass if you want to exercise your inner posho.

Wilson Street Pantry

A simple café in Merchant city, with a very high standard yet not so pricey menu. Particularly good to try for breakfast – they will do your eggs literally any way you like. If you’re after a snack or something light they have a rather interesting selection of sides including truffled mushrooms and goats cheese tartlets. Swankyyy.

St Jude’s

Although this venue is known more for its night time offerings, a recent renovation has turned this into one of the nicest spots for a day-time munch. Aside from the elaborate menu of chickpea burgers and salt & pepper calamari, they have one of the best dessert/drink menus known to Bath Street. Their ‘sweetshop’ menu combines everything from jelly tots and gin to toffee crisps and vodka – creating the godliest cocktail menu ever to exist.

Saramago Cafe

Berry compote, curly kale, hazelnut pesto and tofu sausage makes Saramago cafe the ultimate hipster grotto. Tucked away in the CCA building on Sauchiehall Street, it’s one of those places you would probably walk past without a second look. This cute wee cafe/bar is an ideal spot for food, drinks and the occasional free event for all yon artsy folk. It’s not the first place that would come to mind for somewhere to lunch but if superfoods and small tapas-ish plates are your thing, Saramago is indeed a shout.
