Man pleads guilty to sexual assault in West End pub

The victim was on a sub-crawl

A man has pleaded guilty to a sexual assault in a bar on Great Western Road.

Andrew Smart admitted stripping and sexual assaulting a 25-year-old woman when she was on a sub-crawl.

Smart, 31, was shown on CCTV holding the woman up as he kissed her.

The incident occurred in Coopers Bar in February 2012.

Sub-crawls are a rite of passage for most Glasgow students, where punters stop off at a bar at every subway station.

Footage showed her passed out on the floor and he was seen in a booth on his phone.

He knelt down and stripped her from the waist down – removing her boots, trousers and underwear.

A member of staff pulled him away from the victim and an ambulance was called.

Coopers on Great Western Road has always been popular with students.

Smart made off from the pub, despite being told to stay.

Her group became separated at around 9:30PM and the victim woke up in hospital hours after the incident.

Ms Callander the Procurator Fiscal added: “He kneels down beside the complainer, possibly near her head, the view is obscured by a table.

“Thereafter a few minutes later he is seen at the other end of the complainer’s body.”

Smart’s defence councel Mark Moir argues that the girl consented to kissing, but says the defendent cannot remember the events that followed.

However, when made aware of all evidence against him, he pleaded guilty.

Mr Moir told STV: “He is horrified at what he has done.”

Sheriff John McCormick deferred sentencing until next month.
