As a girl – can we please stop the bitching

There’s a little part of Regina George in all of us

| UPDATED

When I was in my final year at school a girl I know got cheated on by her boyfriend.

This girl spent the entire remainder of her year doing everything in her power to make life shit for this ‘other woman’, until it got so severe that she got reported.

The cheating boyfriend on the other hand walked away scot-free without an ounce of blame.

Granted this girl wasn’t the most pleasant of people but this is something I’ve seen time and time again.

And I’m fucking sick of it.

Why do women hate each other so much?

I’ve seen women sitting in groups bitching about a mutual non-present “friend”.

I’ve heard women pass comment on other girls’ appearances in the street.

I’ve even been punched in the face in a club and called a slut by a girl for standing too close to her ‘man’.

And sadly this kind of bitchiness happens way too often.

This utter tripe does not help

We all do it. We judge every female we meet within nanoseconds and those of you who say you don’t are liars.

And can you honestly say why? Is it jealousy? Is it “healthy natural competition”? Is it the impossible standards set to us by society?

The idea that women can have it all or the fear that if you don’t claw other women down you’ll never get where you want to be?

There has been overwhelming support by the general public for one Matt Taylor – a man who, rather than being celebrated for perfectly landing a spacecraft onto a comet for the first time in human history, had been assailed with abuse and brought to tears over the shirt he decided to wear for his interview.

Most of us think it’s a laugh really.

The shirt in question

But would we have reacted the same way if Taylor had been a beautiful woman wearing a tasteless shirt covered in half-naked men?

Or would we have nitpicked every last detail of her outfit choice? Berated her for belittling her position and setting a bad example for women trying to get into science?

I’m all for the feminist movement, overthrowing the patriarchy and whatnot but I don’t understand how on god’s earth we are supposed to stand up and achieve equality when often it’s our own gender we’re attacking.

So stop judging that girl for getting her legs out – maybe they’re her best asset and she wants to feel sassy.

Stop hating on that girl for receiving male attention – she’s pretty and she works it.

And for god’s sake stop calling each other sluts – it shouldn’t even be a real word.
