They’re at it again: Lecturers threaten strike over pensions

And this time they won’t budge

Students’ exams are again at risk as lecturers threaten industrial action to save their pensions.

Lecturers fear they could see tens of thousands of pounds a year wiped from their pensions if changes in their current scheme go ahead.

Voting for striking – which would affect coursework and results – will take place at Glasgow and 66 unis in the University and College Union (UCU).

UCU went on strike three times last year

Students are no stranger to the strikes after the UCU voted for three days of industrial action last year.

But the Union are playing hard ball this time, saying there will be no room for negotiation. Union general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: “Staff see their pensions as deferred pay and are understandably angry at the impact these proposals would have.

“We are making it very clear in this ballot that if members back industrial action, and there is no negotiated solution, we will be looking to quickly move to an assessment and exam boycott.”
