Police appeal for witnesses after young woman sexually assaulted near George Square

The attack took place hours into referendum trouble


A 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Glasgow city centre in the early hours of Friday morning.

The victim was attacked as tension mounted between Yes and No campaigners after the referendum.

The woman was targeted at around 1:40 AM on Renfield Street near George Square while out with friends.

The attacker escaped when her friends intervened.

The attacker is described as having dark hair, being 5ft 8in tall, and aged between 45 and 50.

He was wearing a light polo-shirt and blue jeans at the time.

The assault took place more specifically between the junction of Renfield Street and West George Street.

The police are urging anyone who may have been in the area around 1:40 AM, or who may have any kind of information, to come forward.
