VIDEO: Masked robbers caught fleeing from Argyll Arcade

Gang escape with bags of stolen goods

This is the moment a gang of robbers made away with bags of stolen jewellery from the Argyll Arcade.

Four men are filmed bolting from the scene as alarms sound and smoke fills the plush shopping mall.

The raiders attempted to break into several stores armed with smoke grenades and a sledgehammer at around 12:45pm.

Dressed in black and grey hooded clothes, the thieves beat a hasty retreat down a nearby alleyway.

Laing’s of Glasgow is believed to be one of the shops targeted by the group.

Janey of Laing’s said: “Unfortunately it was our shop but I really can’t say anything else. I don’t want to comment at this time.”

Tony, from Hilson Gems, said: “Everyone’s fine now. I didn’t see or hear what happened at the time but culprits had a go and made off with some jewels.

“The police have closed the arcade completely and are looking for forensic evidence.

“The window of Laing’s was smashed and thieves grabbed goods from two other shops.”

Strathclyde Police say they are carrying out enquiries following the robbery after jewellery shop Rox was raided for a small amount of jewellery.

Mappin and Webb, Laing’s, and Lewis Grant were also targeted but not broken into.

Four male suspects were last seen running down Buchanan Street outside Argyll Arcade.

Police describe the suspects as 5’8″ in height and of slim build, all in dark clothes. It is believed they made their getaway in a white hatchback.
