Meet your GUSA Captains

These guys were happy to play ball with The Tab.

| UPDATED

In a bid to fight that Freshers Fifteen that all those pizzas and pints have gifted you, everyone’s told you  to get involved and join a team.

But  after the traumatic experience of enrolling on MyCampus, you’re not sure how much more decision making you can take.

Or maybe you’re only reading this article because you fancy one of the captains.

Either way, we’ve got the low down on a few of Glasgow’s best sports clubs to help you out.

Ski and Snowboard Club – Ailsa Pender (Secretary)

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

BUDS 2013. We had sirens, fireworks off the balcony, a game of who can stay in the corn exchange the longest, the introduction of our cooler, Barry, to the club, and a giant crate sledge with about 10 people at the end of the competition.

What makes you the best team at uni?

We are the biggest sports club on campus and GUSSC is notorious for its social scene. Our Cheese and Wine social is one of the best nights of the year. We have non-skiers and non-boarders coming on our trips ever year because it has such a good reputation as one of the best weeks of the year/uni.

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

Our Freestyle Captain, Michael Clark. He has had some great results this year in freestyle competitions, including coming 2nd and 3rd in the Rail Jam and Slopestyle competitions at BUSC Main Event. He was featured in an advert for Dogtag – an insurance company for extreme sports – after winning their competition earlier this year.

Swimming and Waterpolo – Vhari McClements (Swimming Captain)

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

A certain member of the team ‘accidentally’ losing their trunks during their race at Stirling sprints is probably the funniest that is acceptable to share! What makes you the best team at uni? We cater to the widest range of abilities, and also we nail the balance between having a laugh and a crazy social side and getting seriously competitive when we need to, GUSWPC is not just a uni club it’s a way of life!

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

Camilla Hattersley, she had a fantastic swim in 800m final at the commonwealth and is only getting started.

Netball– Sian Collins (Captain)

Course and year

English Literature, 4th Year

Hometown

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour? Picking one single memorable moment is hard because we’ve had such an amazing year with many highlights.

Winning club of the year at the GUSA Ball was fantastic, to receive recognition for all of our hard work was so gratifying. It was the first time Netball had taken the title so making history made it extra special!

What makes you the best team at uni?

GUNC are the best team at uni because we all share a love of our sport and are always eager to win! We strive to make sure that each member has a part to play in the success of our club and push ourselves to the best netballers around!

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

Look out for Rachel Goldsmith – she’ll be easy to spot at as she tends to sport a fabulous fluro colour scheme to training. Never one to shy away from colourful sportswear.

Rugby – Ruaridh Cameron (Captain)

Course and year

History, 4th year

Hometown

Perth

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

Our Club Captain of last year, who will remain anonymous for legal reason, didn’t make it out on any night of our tour to Leeds – unprecedented in our club’s history What makes us the best team at Uni? Aswell as being one of the biggest and most successful clubs at Glasgow, we are also very sociable and are a very close knit club, no matter what year you are in.

Who is the one to look out for in your club?

Wilfred Earlem – has had trouble at 9 in the last couple of years and his move to openside flanker looks to be an inspired decision and I predict big things from that behemoth.

Boat Club – Stephen Fisher (Club Captain)

Course and year

5th Year, Medicine

Hometown Norwich

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

The one piece social in viper, images of lycra clad people crawling the streets of Glasgow by night are definitely memorable.

What makes you the best team at uni?

We are old, formed in 1867 we have a lot of heritage, tradition and a history of success regularly having representatives at Scottish level. We have one of the biggest memberships in the uni and everyone manages a hefty amount of training with their uni work too.

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

Emma McDonald, she is only 19 and already a commonwealth regatta gold medallist and reached the final trials for the GB under 23 team this year. With 4 years of under 23 rowing left she is achieving at a high level at a young age and can hopefully push on from this season of success and get selection into the team.

Surf – Michal Orzeg-Wydra (Captain)

Course and year

4th Year, Law

Hometown

Dunfermline

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

One of the best things about the GUSR is that there is always something funny happening, whether it’d be getting evicted from a family caravan park, someone falling through the ceiling of our weekend getaway pad, or us hopelessly trying to improve our surfing skills.

What makes you the best team at uni?

We still haven’t figured out what those so-called “training sessions” are. Apparently this means we have more time to just have fun and get to know each other during long games of dice and hangover attempts at riding the waves on foam boards. Or so I’ve been told by the miserable members of the other sports clubs on campus.

Who is the one to look out for in your club (and why)?

Just keep an eye out on any fresher joining the club this year. With a bit of luck he/she might be from Australia and actually get past round 2 of BUCS…

Women’s Hockey – Christy Thomson (Captain)

Course and year

4th year, history

Hometown

Edinburgh

What is the funniest or memorable moment from last season/tour?

We beat strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian in the Glasgow Cup. That was enough for GUWHC.

What makes you the best team at uni?

With a membership consisting of around 120 girls, GUWHC has something to offer everyone. We have 4 competitive teams plus a development team who take part in various National and BUCS leagues.

GUWHC not only have a reputation on the pitch but we are renowned for socials on Wednesday nights with the GUMHC boys. Our infamous sub crawl, adopt a fresher and pub golf (to name a few) are definitely a night that you won’t forget.

Although we take our hockey seriously we still remain one of the most sociable clubs at Glasgow university. A friend made in the hockey club, is a friend for life.

Who is the one to look out for in the club (and why)? Our top scoring 1XI vice captain is one to watch this year. Having played with GML, I know that she can hit that top left corner of the goal with her eyes shut.
