New year, new garms: The best Looks in Lockdown this week

Saying goodbye to everything 2020, aside from Exeter students’ insane fashion sense

This week, we hope to bring a bit of joy to all you “damp squibs” out there during such a stressful time. Now exams are over, and trackies have been put in the washing machine, it’s time for your first 2021 edition of Looks in Lockdown.

For some reason, a North Face jacket and a trusty Pret coffee seem to be the perfect combination for these students during this everlasting third lockdown. We hope the looks that we are serving you today sets the tone for the rest of the year.

Katie, second year, Medical Science (@katiehoylee)

Let’s all take a minute to appreciate Katie’s brown North Face. Jealous is an understatement. Katie, like many other Exeter students, adores the colour brown at the moment, and in this look she layers the one shade over the other. Her sweatshirt is from her friend’s small business, which is called @thedumbblondeclub. Her beige trousers are Motel Rocks, and the leopard print fluffy bag is from Depop.

Her North Face jacket, also from Depop, is her favourite part of her outfit, as well as being the coat that everyone and their Mum has gone crazy about over Christmas. We love how well Katie has used different earthy colours to layer, as it shows that dressing for warmth can be extremely fashionable.

Martha, second year, English and Drama (@marthaa.palmer)

Martha’s outfit perfectly balances bright and earthy tones to create a very chic look. Currently, the only form of ‘going out’ for Martha is walking the dog. She tries to make the most of this by wearing her favourite jumpers and coats. We are obsessed with her pink jumper, and hope that 2021 brings colourful and fun clothing its moment to shine. Martha’s favourite parts of the outfit are the jumper and pink beanie, and says she’s “never been a massive fan of the colour, but recently I love it!”

To complete the look, Martha pairs the sweater with some wide legged blue jeans, a staple mid-length faux leather jacket and platform Doc Martens. Since casual clothing seems to be the way forward at the moment, she says her style has “definitely polarised recently”, yet she finds that when she does go out, she puts in far more effort than usual. We really do appreciate it.

Libby, second year, Drama (@libertydonegan)

We’re obsessed with the colours in Libby’s outfit. Her green Converse are, unsurprisingly, her favourite item as she’s had them forever and – as is clear here – they make her green Ralph Lauren jumper and red hair stand out. We love the classy collared shirt and sweater pairing. She’s made this look casual by layering an Urban Outfitters leather jacket on top and adding straight leg jeans from River Island.

Libby tells us that she has recently tried to lean away from fast fashion, and in turn has become far more experimental with what she wears. She credits the various lockdowns for this fashion move, as all the time she’s spent sitting around has allowed her to think about the sorts of fits that would look best. It’s definitely working for her!

Zeki, second year, International Relations (@z.eki)

Zeki’s look shows that Exeter students still know how to dress fashionably, even when faced with a third lockdown. He says that this is his go to outfit as at the moment as it is weather proof for the freezing cold streets of Exeter. The stand out element of the look is his River Island coat, and therefore it’s no surprise that the piece is his favourite.

The black North Face beanie, grey Stone Island hoodie, and black Primark cargos all compliment the yellow and gold velvet texture of the coat. His purple and white Nike trainers add a splash of colour. We can’t help noticing that the yellow, purple and black graffiti on the wall next to him mirrors his outfit. He knows how to get that Insta.

Since he has nowhere to go during lockdown, Zeki tells us his style has changed in the past few months because he “now wears trackies way more”. He is fashionably comfy at all times.

Tia Dewitt, second year, Geography (@tia_dewitt)

Tia’s look in lockdown shows us how to pair mom jeans and vintage oversized jumpers together to achieve casual attire perfection. She says “oversized cozy jumpers are always a good idea in the winter, and mom jeans make sure I actually change out of joggers this year and get stuff done!” Truer words have never been spoken. Sometimes all you need to make your day better is to put on an actual pair of jeans.

Tia’s favourite part of the outfit is the fun yellow Nike jumper from Linear Vintage “because it adds colour to my otherwise very neutral wardrobe”.

Lauren, second year, Law (lauren.siena)

Lauren’s outfit brings an element of style and class to Looks in Lockdown. Her look gives us very “model off duty” vibes. The earthy tones of the pieces all work extremely well together. Her favourite item is the jacket, which was a steal from her mum’s wardrobe. This seems to be a recurring theme, and for good reason as you never know what gems you will find! The rest of her outfit, including her loafers (which we adore and think deserve a special mention) come from & Other Stories. Lauren agrees with us, admitting that she “loves a loafer”.

Like many other students, her style has changed immensely in the last few months, especially because of the cold weather. Trackies and comfy socks are the go to!

Thea, second year, Business Management (@thea_solberg)

Thea’s look is what we like to call street style goals. We love absolutely everything about this outfit. From the oversized sweatshirt to the grey Nike Jordans, Thea might need to share some of her street style secrets with us. Her favourite part of the outfit is the sweatshirt, as she loves wearing oversized hoodies and sweats in general. She likes to be comfy, especially she is spending the majority of her time inside at the moment and there is less to dress up for.

She completes her look with Nike Jordans, a small black handbag and black flared trousers, showing that sometimes a simple colour scheme works best. For us, the handbag is the statement piece, as it is the perfect accessory to finish off the look. Sometimes all you need in life is a little black bag.

Emma, fresher, Anthropology and Spanish (@emmamaxwell__)

Emma’s colour co-ordinated outfit makes the stairs of her halls look a lot more glam. We do not miss those bricks. Her entire outfit – bar her classic Nike Air Forces – is from Depop, as she “adores pre-loved stuff”. We love the sustainable outlook. Emma’s favourite part of the fit is her navy cord shirt, which she’s layered here over a chill white t-shirt. She tells us it’s super versatile as she can also wear it by itself. The shirt is perfect for both chilling around the house – which is all anyone seems to be doing at the moment – and going out.

During lockdown, Emma has found that she gravitates more towards looser and oversized clothing as most of her time is spent indoors. Side note, we’re obsessed with your hair. Tell us your secret.

Lucy, second year, Geography (@lucyterryyy)

Lucy is the epitome of the Exetah girl with her Pret coffee in hand. She has paired her funky Collusion flares with a white vest top from Depop, and completed the fit with another Exeter favourite, a black North Face coat. Lucy’s favourite piece is her statement checked trousers. She tells us that she prefers wearing fun trousers and more plain tops during winter because they are usually covered up by coats.

She confesses that her style has always been “very typical Exeter”, as the look is super casual and easy to pull off. Recently she’s ordered a bunch of groovy colourful trousers to brighten her mood, which she says have allowed her to express herself more through fashion.

Ellie, second year, Law (@eleanor__long)

Ellie is our second Air Force wearing Pret addict of the week. She tells us that she’s been opting for super chill clothes during lockdown because she wants to be comfy for her “one and only Pret trip of the day”. Priorities. Her look is super colour coordinated. Ellie’s baggy black jeans are from Weekday and paired with her beige Topshop jumper and Air Forces.

Her tote bag – her favourite piece – adds a pop of colour to the look. She copped it from a Slovenian market for 10 euros, and explains that she loves the fact it’s hand printed and super unique. When we’re allowed to escape the country, Slovenian markets will be the first stop we make.
