Vigil for George Floyd to be held in Exeter this Saturday

“There will be a silence of 8 minutes and 46 seconds”

A peaceful vigil commemorating the life of George Floyd will be held at the Flowerpot Playing Fields this Saturday.

The organisers stress that social distancing will be carried out, and that PPE should be worn where possible.

In the event description, the organisers explain “This is a peaceful vigil for George Floyd and all victims of violent acts of racism and police brutality. George Floyd was a black man who was brutally and publicly murdered by Minneapolis Police Department.

“His final words were, “I can’t breathe”. In light of the recent escalation of anti-racist protests in the USA and UK, this event promotes justice and safety for black people in every community.”

Similar protests have been announced over the past few days in Cardiff, Manchester and Bristol.

The organisers continue: “There will be a silence of 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

“You are encouraged to bring signs which support the Black Lives Matter movement and/or any grassroots organisations which work to resist racism.

“This is a social distance event. We must maintain at least a 2m distance from other people, wear PPE (gloves, masks) where possible and gather in groups of 6 people maximum. The location was chosen to prioritise social distancing. If you are feeling unwell, please do not attend.”
