So you’re going to Move for the first time?
Bring gum
Let’s be honest, term’s getting on. It’s week seven, and the allure of another classic Cheesy Tuesday is fading fast. The music’s shit, and there’s only so much dad-dancing you can put yourself through before you realise “the Sesh” has become like one big office-Christmas party.
You’re playing it safe but you’ve decided to change it up. You want more edge, more grit, more… grime. You want to go somewhere where you can exhibit the freshness of your creps whilst listening to some choice picks from the new Giggs album. You want to feel alive.
And you’ve heard rumours. You know, from your cool mates. Rumours of some place down by the Quay. A place free from society’s oppressive constraints, where the usual Jack Wills dress-code doesn’t apply. A place where filthy sub-bass and intense, intense humidity converge exquisitely, and sweatily. You’re going to The Getdown to get down, and it’s fucking “lit”.
What to wear
People pretty much just dress however they want at Move. The usual hypebeast brands (Supreme, Huf etc.) will score you brownie points from many in attendance, as will Adidas, and Nike, and probably Ralph Lauren. Don’t feel like such brands are a necessity however, as the main concern of those visiting Move will be comfort, and not how dope they look.
A night out in Exeter’s Warmest Club™ will get you sweating no matter what clothes you wear, or how often you visit the water fountain, or how often you go to cool off in the cramped smoking area. Try to avoid anything too heavy, big shirts are a poor choice, as are jumpers. That’s not to say it can’t be done, however it takes a brave soul to don anything too thick during the night’s peak in the main room.
If you’re looking for pointers on what to wear to look as fire as possible, literally wear whatever clothes you want to wear. Pretty much anything goes in Move and you’ll do well to just wear your favourite duds.
Some people like to use an evening Move as an opportunity to experiment with a new style or look, it’s an excellent opportunity to find yourself! One time I saw this dude in the club wearing only a toga and a pair of Yeezy Boosts. Not only was he cool as a cucumber in his breathable robe, but he seemed to dance with relative ease in his comfy and fashionable sneaks. So yeah, maybe something like that? Or not, your choice.
Music
Move’s DJs play a wide range of genres, but Hip-Hop, R‘n’B and Grime are the main faire. If these aren’t to your taste however, don’t despair; there is inevitably eventually something for everyone at some point during the evening. A banger from The Life of Pablo will follow “Drunk in Love”, a Gucci Mane verse will transition into anything Drake has released ever. The music at Move is eclectic and dark and bass-heavy, in short, it’s sick.
Move is the closest Exeter has to offer to Motion or Fabric or The Rainbow, and whilst you’re aware of the safety of your surroundings, the heavy Trap and Grime played gives the club an atmosphere of relative menace. This may not be to everyone’s taste, but if you’re looking for “edge”, Move is a step in the right direction. You’re still in Exeter, and the things that come along with this still apply, but Move offers an opportunity to at least feel like you’re doing something actually cool.
Most of all, Move wants you to dance. Most people just dance like how they’ve seen their favourite rapper dance which is a bit funny to watch but great fun to do. Let loose and don’t be afraid to go in, it’s dark as shit in the downstairs room so probs nobody will see you.
Getting Fucked Up
As with any club that has an “alternative” image, some people will use a night out in Move as an opportunity to experiment with more than their style. If you’re going to Move, you’ll find out what this means fairly quickly. Glassy-eyed students in Polo caps brush past you as you enter. If you want to make friends in the smoking area, bring gum.
This being said however, a night at Move doesn’t require drugs or alcohol to be fun. On a good night the atmosphere alone is enough to get you gassed, and on a bad night there’s always the bar. Move is a great place just to dance and let off some steam, and whether you enjoy being off your nut or not whilst you’re crunking out, you’ll have a rad time with the right attitude.
