An Exeter student has died while travelling in Thailand

She had arrived on the island of Ko Chang the day before

Exeter student Bryony Freestone was on a short holiday with her friends to Thailand when she drowned on Sunday morning

Local media say the 19-year-old was found unconscious on the beach by volunteers at 10am on Sunday, in front of the White Sand Beach Resort.

Medics reportedly tried to resuscitate her at the scene before taking her to the International Clinic on Ko Chang where doctors spent two hours trying to save her life. There had been warnings of severe weather conditions and with red flags posted on the island.

Thai media reported that the group of four had arrived the day before the incident and were planning on a short stay. Bryony’s body has been sent to the British Embassy in Bangkok for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British National who sadly died in Thailand on 14 August.”
