Student Rents in Exeter Among UK’s Highest

Statistics from EasyRoommate.co.uk reveal Exeter as an expensive student city.

Shock statistics have revealed that private rent costs in Exeter are the fourth highest in the country, second only to Oxbridge and London areas.

According to statistics published by EasyRoommate.co.uk, the average cost of living in Exeter is priced at around £90 per week – almost double the average rent prices of just £46 a week in rainy Pontypridd, dubbed the cheapest University town in the UK last year.

Experts speculate these high prices are down to a rise in applications for the University, meaning a rise in demand for houses in the city.

It is also likely to be down to higher mortgage costs in the current economic climate.

However, for most final years who receive just £4,583 a year from Student Finance, the loan just doesn’t cover the high costs of accommodation – the average 12 month contract costs around £4,620.

Powderham Cresent, a prime spot for expensive student accommodation.

Charlotte, a Mount Pleasant resident said, “I think it’s all relative. Exeter is nice but I think the main issue is that the loan may not cover rent – let alone food and uni supplies”

But the main question on The Tab’s lips was: what else do Exeter students have to sacrifice to attend one of the UK’s priciest academic institutions?

“I couldn’t justify spending so much money when my hometown is just half an hour away” said one marketing undergrad.

“When I was told I could live at home for just £50 a month, with food and bills included, it just made sense to do that. Even with travel costs, I’m still spending less than £2k a year.”

When asked about his thoughts on the matter, Toby, a second year student, was okay with it, saying: “It’s true that accommodation here is expensive but its a cost I’m willing to pay to be able to live in such a nice city”
