Exeter Promotes Plant Power

Exeter University test the trusty office plant against happiness and productivity

Exeter University researchers have designed a psychology experiment to look into whether office plants can improve business profits and boost staff well-being.

Plants leaf workers content and productive

The study, aiming to revive faith in the trusty desk plant, will take place at this year’s 100th Chelsea Flower Show.

The experiment builds on Dr Craig Knight’s previous research with Exeter’s Psychology Department which revealed that workers who were able to personalise their working environment were both happier and more productive.

Dr Knight said: “If the results indicate that plants can boost business effectiveness, it would give company managers a real incentive to share control of office space with their staff and create a meaningful, more grown up space.”

This is good news for us  – the study suggests that the (now dead) cactus Mum bought us in first year most likely improved our grades, and that our secret One Direction poster collection around our desks is instrumental to our mental wellbeing – Naturally.
