Devon’s answer to Comic-Con will play host to some colourful characters next month

It’s hard to imagine Candi starring alongside the Cybermen in nightmares of Dr Who-loving children.

But the pink Dalek, created to support breast cancer research, will be making an appearance in town next month as the South West’s biggest sci-fi fans gather in Exeter.

Conveniently timed with the launch of the next Dr Who series, PHONICON 2013 – Devon’s answer to Comic-Con – is invading the Exeter Phoenix in April.

Candi, the moving, talking, candyfloss-coloured Dalek, will join an assortment of costumed characters, directors and writers at the science fiction and fantasy event on Sunday April 7.

Event organiser Lee Rawlings said he “can’t wait to see people’s faces” as Candi and her creator Shane Rhodes make their grand entrance, expecting them to be the exciting centre-piece of the whole event.

Anneke Wills, who played Doctor Who assistant Polly, will make an appearance. Tom Baker is also on the guestlist, although closer inspection shows him to be a Devonian singer/songwriter, not the legendary fourth incarnation of the Doctor himself.
