Forum Evacuation

An alarm in the forum has caused students to be evacuated. It is currently unclear if this is a drill or if an actual fire has broken out.

Hardworking students nursing hangovers from Timepiece Friday have been evacuated from the Forum and Library following an alarm.

At this moment in time it is unclear if it is just a drill or if an actual fire has been reported.

Laura Turnbull, fourth year Philosophy and French student, was disrupted by the alarm and evacuation. “It was pretty disruptive and confusing. We’ve had mixed messages –  we were told to wait for further instructions but then someone else came in and told us to go outside. The librarians were upset because no one had left, but we didn’t know what we were supposed to do.”

Another student, Mark Gibbs, third year English student, told The Tab they were ushered out by a “really polite, but unenthusiastic recording of a woman’s voice” who informed the students that due to circumstances beyond the staff’s control everyone must leave the building. Students were then told to proceed to the nearest exit and not to use the lifts. Mark added: “the lack of any alarm in her voice made the students confused as to what was going on.”

The Tab will update you as more information becomes available.

Update: The alarm was sounded at approximately 2.05pm. Students were allowed back in at approximately 2.25pm.

It appears to have been a false alarm, but one that was not known about in advance by most of the staff.
