Train prices are set to rocket in the new year

| UPDATED Train Train Fare

With the end of term drawing ever closer, we are all getting ready to make that trek back home in serious need of a detox after one too many nights out at Arena, and for most of us this means hopping on a train.

Most students would agree that this year’s rising degree fees AND bills AND alcohol prices have already stretched our loans to the edge, but now the train companies have agreed a rise in fares too, burning that hole in our pockets even more.

The prices are set to increase by an average of 3.9% next year, with planned cuts to services which are sure increase the rate of cancelled trains.

Many protesters gathered at train stations across the South-West of England this week (including Exeter St. David’s) to hand out Christmas cards with the message that passengers can “look forward” to a 2013 “packed full of cancelled trains, service cuts, and ticket office closures”. These protests were organised by the TUC’s Action for Rail campaign in the hopes that commuters would send the cards on to local MPs in objection to the rising fees.

One student at the university stated: “It’s ridiculous. The railways should belong to the government!”

Here at The Tab, we’re left with one question: How will we afford our jagerbombs now??
