Rain to delay trains for weeks

Students might want to think about walking home as tracks out of Exeter remain damaged after flooding.

The looming rush home for Christmas could be thrown into chaos as trains out of Exeter will be delayed for weeks after recent flooding.

Trains through Devon and Somerset are still suspended after heavy rain swamped tracks and signal boxes in the South West.

Network Rail engineers are battling to restore services and they hope to finish this evening.

However, trains will only then run on a reduced timetable of just two per hour. The limited service could be in place for as long as two weeks, taking the delays perilously close to the end of term.

There is currently no service between Exeter and Taunton. Trains between Exeter St David’s and London Paddington generally pass through Taunton.

The line between Exeter and Plymouth is also closed after a landslide hit tracks at the seaside town of Teignmouth.
