A number of sexual assaults on women in city cabs have taken place over the last few weeks and police are urging victims to come forward.

An Exeter taxi driver, in his 30s, has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and police are advising people to be extra careful when using cabs.

One victim came forward five weeks ago, claiming a taxi driver had leaned back in the cab and groped her. A similar incident allegedly occured just a week ago.

There is an increasing number of unlicensed taxis operating in the city.

Matthew Daly, of Exeter-based Westside Taxis, said: “I’ve been hearing all the time about certain taxis getting done for different things.”

However, only a few incidents are known to the police. Community safety sergeant Beverly Weston said: “With increased hours of darkness at this time of year I would always encourage individuals to reassess their normal routes home.”

Anyone who believes they have been the victim of a sexual attack in a taxi is asked to call 101, quoting crime reference DE/12/10172.
