Cow poo and left over food could save our future

In true Devonian style, experts at Exeter University have been awarded £4 million for research into creating fuel from cow dung to power British homes.

Did you just fart?

The project is one of six taking place across the country, funded by the Biotechnical and Biological Sciences Research Council.

The research could help promote economic growth and give Britain a chance to become the most efficient converters of waste into energy.

The team, headed by Dr Orkun Soyer, includes experts from Exeter University, Imperial College London and Harvard University.

They aim to work out how cells break down material such as food waste and animal dung. By doing this, they can recreate the process to create an alternative fuel source.

Dr Soyer said: “We are delighted to secure such a significant grant, which will enable us to carry out ground – breaking research. It could be the key to a more sustainable future.”
