Matt Chalk investigates some of the Athletic Union’s unsung heroes, and why you might consider sampling something new.

Bored of playing the so-called stereotypical and more popular sports? Not very good at them? Or simply fancy something a bit different?

Exclusively for The Tab, Matt Chalk investigates some of the Athletic Union’s unsung heroes, and why you might consider sampling something new.

Triathlon

You could be the next Alistair Brownlee

Spurred on from Team GB’s success in this sport at the Olympics, you might consider trying this challenging event: consisting of the three disciplines of running, swimming and cycling. At Exeter, the club caters for all abilities. It costs £80 to join and this covers all training, which impressively is available every day if you so desired. It offers group cycle rides every Saturday, which is a fantastic opportunity to explore the local countryside and get out of Exeter. Combining three different sports, the triathlon club is perfect for anyone looking to improve their fitness.

American Football

Good hustle

As firm followers of the English game of football, we Brits are often somewhat dubious of the American version of the game. However, the growth of the sport in the UK has been significant with more and more becoming fans of the NFL. An incredibly tactical game of offense and defense, many fans enjoy the brilliant touchdowns and big hits. If you enjoy watching the game and fancy getting involved, then the Exeter Demons can afford you the perfect opportunity.

Surfing

As Exeter students, we are fortunately located. North Devon and Cornwall, two UK surfing hotspots, are easily accessible and with club membership costing just £35, who could resist the opportunity to go on weekend surfing trips to the likes of Woolacombe, Croyde and Polzeath? Despite the cold weather, surfing is still an attractive option especially when the waves are big. According to members, the Exeter Uni Surf Club also hosts some impressive socials. So if you fancy donning the wetsuit and taking advantage of Exeter’s geographical location, perhaps surfing might be the sport for you.

Water Polo

Wet and wild

While Holland Hall residents may be more familiar with another form of Polo, the version played in the pool is a fun way of getting fit in a team environment. A sport that many have never tried, it is somewhat similar to netball or handball but is played in the water. This sport will also help to build up strength, due to its physical and fast paced nature.

Archery

Perhaps it is the image of Robin Hood, or possibly the hats worn by the South Koreans during the Olympics that make you think of this sport. However, at Exeter the Archery Club offers you the chance to try out the sport for yourself. It requires an eagle eye, a steady hand and technical ability to fire arrows at targets of varying distance. The club offers a six-week introductory course for beginners along with both competitions and training for those more experienced. The club also offers social opportunities with treasure hunts, beach barbecues and an upcoming Halloween social.
