Sir Steve served as a member of the board between 2006 and 2009. He rejoined the board in 2011 as a Universities UK nominated member and deputy chair.

Sir Steve replaces Professor David Eastwood as chairman. Eastwood withdrew from the board on 21 September 2012.

Mary Curnock Cook, chief executive of UCAS said: “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Sir Steve Smith as the new chair of the UCAS Board.

“[He] brings a wealth of experience in the sector which will be invaluable.”

UCAS is the British admissions service for people applying to universities and colleges. The board is its governing body.

Sir Steve’s appointment is the latest in a series of events that have seen Exeter dominate the higher education scene.

Exeter was named University of the Year by The Sunday Times in September.

The uni also moved into the top 200 in both The Times Higher Education and the QS world rankings.
