EUTC 3s report on their latest BUCS action: the BUCS Western 2A League clash against Winchester 1s

Exeter University 3s emerged from their encounter with Winchester 1s on Wednesday 22nd February with their precious unbeaten record in the BUCS Western 2A League still intact as they achieved a mauling 12 – 0 victory.

Having already played Winchester this year, Exeter knew their players and what to expect. Both pairs began their doubles matches and the 1st pair of Jacques Sheehan and Will Phillips won in no more than 25 minutes… even before the 2nd pair had finished their first set!

The 2nd pair of George Hackett and Matt Butterfield, making his long-awaited debut in 2012, also went to win in a game that contrasted to the 1st pairs’ as they gradually ground down their opponents in a war of attrition.

Exeter then went on to win in all their singles matches in straight sets despite Winchester being singles specialists – thus demonstrating how well Exeter have been performing of late.

Will Phillips, after an easy first set, had to fight for a 7-5 win in the second and George Hackett, playing number 4 for Exeter, went on last and managed to trounce his opponent as he claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

The 3s, then, having taken a great deal of confidence from the game versus Winchester, are now eager to protect and prolong their unbeaten record as they near the back-end of the season whilst also looking to cement a 2nd place finish in the league.
