Preview: "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui"
Jessica Burgess describes EUTCo’s latest production.
Exeter University Theatre Company (EUTCo) presents Brecht’s ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’.
The play will run from the 29th February to the 3rd March 2012. Brecht transports the events of Hitler’s rise to power to a destitute 1930s Chicago. Through ruthless means, gangster Arturo Ui takes hold of the city’s struggling green-grocery trade, with devastating results.
EUTCo’s annual production at the Exeter Northcott has been exceedingly popular in the past and this year is set to be no exception. EUTCo are renowned for their professional and exciting approach to theatre. Their production of Simon Stephen’s ‘Motortown’ at the Edinburgh fringe last summer was met with stupendous reviews:
“A stunning atmosphere and wonderful performances." – What's On Stage
"It's delightful to see a young crew make light work of a mature piece of
contemporary theatre." – Three Weeks (on Chatroom)
"Exciting, bold and definitely worth your time." – Broadway Baby (on Chatroom)
“An excellent production” – Razz My Berries
This year’s production of ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’ tells a story of underhand dealings, betrayal and murder that is a lesson to us all, not to be forgotten.
Director Zac Price describes it as “a cinematic experience on a truly grand scale, taking inspiration from the popular 'film noir' genre. The show aims to utilise the core aspects of Brecht's epic theatre, entwined with the blues culture of Chicago in the 1930s.”
Thanks to the outstanding contributions of a dedicated cast and crew of over forty, ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’ promises to be an evening of unmissable entertainment.
