Edinburgh University ranked best Scottish and sixth best UK university in Times Higher world rankings

St Andrews didn’t even make the top 200


The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 have been released, with Edinburgh University placing joint 30th overall alongside Hong Kong University.

Edinburgh came 30th in last year’s rankings too.

This means that Edinburgh Uni is the sixth best UK university according to Times Higher Education, following Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL and LSE.

Edinburgh also placed significantly higher than any other Scottish university, with Glasgow taking 86th place, Aberdeen 158th, and Dundee and St Andrews not even making the top 200.

The University of Edinburgh also ranked in the top 20 worldwide for three subject areas, coming 10th for arts and humanities, 15th for law and 16th for psychology.

Topping the overall rankings were Oxford in 1st, Cal Tech and Harvard in joint 2nd, Stanford in 4th, and Cambridge and MIT in joint 5th.
