An Edinburgh University student has won the Great British Bake Off

He is the youngest ever and first Scottish winner

Last night, an Edinburgh University student won the Great British Bake Off.

Peter Sawkins is a third year accounting and finance student and is both the youngest and first Scottish contestant to win the competition.

Peter said in an Instagram post: “For everyone I need to thank, I hope you know how much I appreciate you.

“I don’t think I have the capacity right now to properly express my thanks and appreciation so I shall leave it at this.

“Much love, P x.”

Peter won star baker twice in the competition, first in week one and again in the semi-finals.

He even earned himself a Paul Hollywood handshake for his signature challenge in the semi-finals.

His favourites were Scottish inspired bakes such as a Chris Hoy showstopper, a cranachan biscuit structure, and a replica of the Edinburgh city skyline in bread form.

Whether you’ve seen him studying in Potterrow or walking along Middle Meadow Walk, Peter has become an Edinburgh icon.

From all of us here at Edinburgh University, congrats Peter. You’ve done us very proud.
